FAQ
Thinking of ordering a custom cake but have some questions? Let me try to answer some of the most popular questions and if you still have more please email me.
1. Is there a minimum order?
Yes, minimum order is $350. (which is the cost of a basic single tier cake).
2. How much cake should I order?
See SERVING GUIDE here. Do bear in mind that the cake yield will depend on how big a slice is served. As fondant cakes are typically denser and richer than cream cakes you may wish to serve smaller slices. The standard height of my cakes are approx 4.5 inch and a good serving size would be 2x1x4.5 inch. This would be the size I used in my serving guide. For kids and wedding portions I would even cut each slice into 2 pieces. I also offer extended height and double height cakes based on the requested design.
3. How does the design process work?
You can send me ideas from my gallery or from google so I can get an idea on what you are looking for. I can also match design to decorations, invitations, dresses etc. However, do note I will not copy another cake design but will merely take inspiration from it. Even my own previous design I cannot replicate perfectly as everything is handcrafted. If the design belongs to another local baker, I will prefer you go directly to them. I only provide sketches for weddings cakes. I prefer to not be restricted by a fixed design and hope for creative freedom to produce a unique piece.
4. Are there any designs you don’t do?
My specialties are pretty feminine floral cakes, whimsical cute cakes, minimalistic and stylish designs. I don’t do 3D sculpted cakes.
5. Can I call or meet you?
As a busy mother of three I am unable to meet my clients to discuss their order. Enquiries can be made via email. Response is made within 48 hours.
6. I’ve changed my mind, can I make changes?
Once the deposit has been paid, any changes will incur an additional design charge. Changes are only allowed up to 2 weeks before your event. The size of the cake may not be changed with less than 2 weeks notice. See Terms and Conditions.
7. Can I cancel my order?
You may cancel up to 2 weeks before an event. Restrictions will apply. See Terms and Conditions.
8. Do you offer other desserts?
No, my specialty is custom design fondant cakes. As an addon I can do matching cupcakes, or a buttercream smash cake for baby’s 1st birthday. I don’t do Dessert tables.
9. Are you halal certified?
No.
10. Do you cater to dietary restrictions?
No. My cakes ingredients, with the exception of carrot, do not contain nuts but my kitchen is not nut free.
11. Can you make my cake less sweet?
My most FAQ! My cake sponge recipes are adjusted for less sugar. A fondant cake is already sweet by the time you add the buttercream filling, mask in chocolate ganache and add the fondant. But I have long standing clients who like it so it’s impossible to cater to everyone’s taste.
12. What finishes do you offer?
I only offer fondant finished cakes.
13. Do you offer samples or tasting sessions?
No, I am home based and bake only to order.
14. Can I order 2kgs cake?
No. My cakes are not sold by weight as is common in commercial bakeries. I offer a custom designed service and the quantity of cake will be based on # of servings and design.
15. Where are you based?
I am based in Upper Bukit Timah, Singapore.
16. Can I self collect?
You have the option to self collect if your cake order is below 2 tiers. Address will be provided to you upon confirmed order and payment received. Cakes must be collected at allocated time. Once collected, transportation becomes your own responsibility. Jo Takes the Cake takes no responsibility for damages after collection.
17. How do I confirm my order?
Your order is confirmed upon payment of 50% deposit. Balance is due 2 weeks before the event talks place. Celebration cakes require full to confirm order. See Terms and Conditions.
18. Do you offer discounts or packages?
No my quotes are final. My prices are reflective of the time spent, years of experience and quality of my final product.
19. How to store my cake after delivery?
Fondant cakes should NOT be stored in the fridge, as this causes condensation. An air conditioned / cool room is best, and then once the cake is cut, the decorations can be removed. Any leftover cake can be refrigerated for a week, or frozen into smaller portions. If your event is outdoors, there will be limited time before the cake starts sweating and looking worse for wear….I do not recommend.
20. How long in advance to order?
One month in advance is required, however, availability cannot be guaranteed due to limited weekly slots. Do get in touch as soon as you know your event date.
21. Do you accept orders on short notice?
Availability cannot be guaranteed. Orders on short notice (less than 1 week) will incur a surcharge of 25%.
22. Do you accept orders on public holidays and Sunday or Monday?
Orders for collection/delivery on a public holiday or 2 days following a public holiday will incur a 25% surcharge. Surcharges will also apply for Sunday afternoons and Mondays.
23. Do you use fresh flowers on cakes?
For food and safety reasons I do not use fresh flowers on my cakes.
24. How will my cake be packaged?
Cakes are packed in standard cake box which may be adapted for taller cakes and open areas secured with cling wrap. Simple candles and plastic cake knife will be included. However I do recommend a sharp big knife for slicing fondant cakes.
25. Can I eat the sugar figurines, decorations and sugar flowers?
Whilst these are technically edible I do not recommend eating as they would have been made a few days in advance to allow them to set and come very hard. They will also contain internal supports like cocktail sticks, skewers, polystyrene, aluminum foil and wires.
